Pauline Melnyk, MCC, has been an avid donor and supporter of the ICF Foundation for years. After helping launch several successful Ignite Projects with ICF Edmonton, she decided it was time to launch her own Ignite Project as an individual coach. Knowing that she wanted to focus her efforts on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), she reached out to a friend and colleague, Trina Innes, MBA.
Trina is the executive director of sustainability services at Alberta Municipalities, an organization in Alberta, Canada that works with municipal leaders to advocate for solutions to municipal issues and supports communities by providing services that help them thrive and become more resilient. Alberta Municipalities has also partnered with Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Government of Alberta on a climate initiative called the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.
Pauline Melnyk, MCC, expressed, “[The Ignite Initiative] gave us a good opportunity to bring the three partnerships together doing the things that we love, which is giving back to create social change, creating a big difference in humanity, and also thinking about organizations that have a direct impact on the climate change efforts.“
Between October 2023 to April 2024, this project included nine participants from Alberta Municipalities and 10 ICF-credentialed coaches from around the globe.
The key focus areas of this coaching engagement included:
- Time management
- Supervision
- Communication
- Meeting facilitation
- Active listening
- Canadian/Alberta workplace culture
- Dealing with challenging situations
- Career and strategic direction
The key outcomes of this coaching engagement include:
- Improved confidence and/or affirmation, showing up authentically
- Defining life/career values
- Improved ability to speak up
- Identifying personal strengths
- Personal saboteurs & mitigation strategies
- Techniques to guide decision-making
- And more!
As a result of the project, Trina Innes, MBA, shared, “People really valued the coach helping them gain a fresh perspective on things about their work life that they were struggling with and needed help with to improve their day-to-day engagement at work.” She went on to say, “They felt that they were stronger as leaders, and they are actually implementing the strategies and sharing some of these techniques with the people that they work with.”
